Best Business Bank Account Malaysia 2026: Maybank vs CIMB vs RHB & More
Which Malaysian business bank account should an SME choose in 2026? We compare Maybank, CIMB, RHB, Hong Leong and the features that matter to Sdn Bhd owners.
Which business bank account is best?
There is no universal winner. For a small Malaysian SME, Maybank SME First is attractive for its RM1,000 initial deposit and broad business ecosystem; CIMB Business Current Account is worth considering if OCTO Biz fits your workflow; RHB is strong where Reflex and multi-user business banking matter; and Hong Leong has low-entry options for some sole proprietors. The best choice depends on entity type, payment workflow, cash/cheques, approvals and foreign-currency needs.
1. What we compared
A business current account is not just somewhere to park cash. For an owner-managed company, it becomes part of the operating system: customer collections, DuitNow transfers, supplier payments, payroll, debit cards, bank reconciliation and approval controls.
We prioritised features that matter to Malaysian SMEs: opening deposit, eligible entity types, digital banking, multi-user/approval workflow, published service charges, branch/cash needs and suitability for a growing Sdn Bhd. Promotions are deliberately given less weight because they change quickly.
2. Snapshot comparison
| Bank / account | Published opening requirement highlighted in our research | Digital/business platform | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maybank SME First Account/-i | RM1,000 initial deposit | Maybank business digital ecosystem | SMEs wanting a mainstream bank with relatively accessible opening deposit. |
| CIMB Business Current Account | RM3,000 minimum initial deposit on current product page | OCTO Biz / CIMB business banking | SMEs already comfortable with CIMB or wanting its digital workflow. |
| RHB Business Current Account/-i | RM1,000 sole proprietor; RM3,000 businesses/companies | RHB Reflex | Businesses that value business-banking controls and Reflex features. |
| Hong Leong Pay&Save (business option) | RM50 for the sole-proprietor product shown on HLB business deposits page | HLB Connect/business services vary by product | Very small sole proprietors prioritising a low entry amount. |
Important: banks have multiple current-account products. Do not assume a deposit requirement for one product applies to every entity type or account at that bank.
3. Maybank SME First Account/-i
Maybank's current SME First information shows a RM1,000 minimum initial deposit for the SME First Account, SME First Account-i and SME First Investment Account-i. The online-activation FAQ also lists Sdn Bhd and partnerships among eligible structures subject to the stated requirements.
Maybank's published fee information for SME First Account includes a RM10 half-yearly service charge that can be waived where the relevant average-balance condition is met. Verify the latest product disclosure before opening because fees and channel requirements can change.
Why we like it: RM1,000 is a relatively accessible opening amount for a Sdn Bhd, and Maybank's large Malaysian footprint is useful if your business still handles branch transactions, cheques or cash. It is a sensible default shortlist for many SMEs.
Watch-outs: decide whether the specific Maybank business digital platform and approval setup meet your needs. A founder who only wants mobile transfers has different requirements from a finance team with maker/checker approvals.
4. CIMB Business Current Account
CIMB's current Business Current Account page states a minimum initial deposit of RM3,000 and provides application routes for sole proprietorships, partnerships/LLPs and Sdn Bhd/Berhad entities. CIMB's published current-account fee schedule states a RM10 half-yearly service charge where average credit balance is below RM1,000, while search fees for account opening are not applicable to individuals and SMEs.
CIMB has also been evolving its business digital proposition around OCTO Biz. If your personal banking is already with CIMB, do not choose the business account purely for familiarity—test the business workflow separately, especially user access and approvals.
Best for: SMEs that prefer CIMB's ecosystem, need a conventional business current account and are comfortable with the higher opening deposit relative to some alternatives.
5. RHB Business Current Account and RHB Reflex
RHB's published business current-account eligibility covers private limited companies, sole proprietors and partnerships. The bank currently states an initial deposit of RM1,000 for sole proprietorships and RM3,000 for businesses and companies.
RHB Reflex is a key reason to shortlist RHB for a more structured SME. RHB's service-charge page distinguishes inquiry-only, transactional and higher-tier Reflex access. Published charges show that some SME/sole-proprietor access configurations have waived monthly subscription fees, while other premium tiers carry charges.
Best for: businesses that care about business-banking permissions, transaction workflow and potentially integration rather than just having a debit card.
6. Hong Leong Bank
Hong Leong's business deposit page currently promotes Pay&Save Account for sole proprietors with a low RM50 initial deposit. Its broader current-account products and eligibility differ, so a Sdn Bhd should check the specific business current account rather than assuming the RM50 offer applies.
Best for: sole proprietors who want a low initial funding requirement and like HLB's banking ecosystem. For a Sdn Bhd, compare the appropriate corporate/business product on its own terms.
7. What about Alliance, OCBC, UOB and other banks?
They should not be ignored. Alliance, OCBC and UOB all serve Malaysian businesses, and the right choice can depend on where your customers and suppliers bank, whether you need trade facilities, FX, cross-border payments or relationship-manager support. Alliance, for example, announced in March 2026 that its Basic Current Account/-i minimum initial deposit would be revised from RM500 to RM100 effective 1 April 2026 for the relevant product.
We have not forced every bank into a simplistic ranking because “business current account” can refer to different products for micro enterprises, sole proprietors and incorporated companies. For a Sdn Bhd, compare the exact eligible product rather than the cheapest account displayed on a bank's website.
8. The features that matter more than the opening deposit
- Maker/checker approvals: can one person prepare a payment and another approve it?
- User permissions: can your accountant or finance staff have restricted access?
- DuitNow and transfer limits: check both fees and practical daily limits.
- Payroll: consider bulk payments if you expect employees.
- Bank feeds: a clean connection to your accounting software can save hours of reconciliation.
- Cash and cheque handling: still important for some retail, construction and traditional businesses.
- Foreign currency and overseas payments: critical for importers, exporters and international-service businesses.
- Cards: understand debit-card controls and whether multiple users can be supported appropriately.
- Branch network: irrelevant to some digital businesses, essential to cash-heavy businesses.
- Financing relationship: if you expect working-capital or trade facilities, consider the broader banking relationship.
9. Sole proprietor vs Sdn Bhd
A sole proprietor can sometimes access simpler or lower-deposit products because the business and individual are legally linked. A Sdn Bhd is a separate legal entity and banks normally require corporate documents, director/shareholder information and authorised-signatory arrangements.
Do not open an account advertised to “small business” until you confirm your exact entity type is eligible. The bank may have a different product for Sdn Bhd.
10. What documents should a Sdn Bhd prepare?
Requirements vary by bank and onboarding route, but expect the bank to verify the company, directors, authorised signatories and beneficial owners. Online onboarding can reduce paperwork, but complex ownership or foreign directors/shareholders may still trigger additional checks or branch involvement.
Prepare your SSM registration information, identification documents, business address/contact information, nature of business and expected account activity. The bank may request additional supporting documents under its customer due-diligence process.
11. Example choices by business type
| Business | What we would prioritise | Shortlist approach |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer / sole proprietor | Low opening requirement, easy mobile payments | Compare HLB sole-proprietor options, Maybank SME First and other micro-business accounts. |
| New one-owner Sdn Bhd | Simple onboarding + reliable business banking | Maybank SME First, CIMB Business Current Account and RHB Business Current Account. |
| SME with finance staff | Maker/checker, user permissions, bulk payments | Focus on RHB Reflex, Maybank/CIMB business platforms and equivalent corporate systems. |
| Importer / exporter | FX, overseas transfers, trade services | Compare full business banking proposition, not just current-account fee. |
| Cash-heavy retailer | Branches/CDM, cash handling, POS ecosystem | Large branch/ATM/CDM footprint can matter more than a RM1,000 deposit difference. |
12. Should you have accounts with more than one bank?
As a business grows, a second bank can improve operational resilience and support different facilities. But a brand-new micro business usually benefits more from keeping its cash management simple. Start with one account that fits the workflow; add another when there is a clear reason such as financing, FX, payment redundancy or customer collections.
13. Our practical ranking
Best general starting shortlist for a new Sdn Bhd: Maybank SME First, CIMB Business Current Account and RHB Business Current Account. We would compare these three first because they combine mainstream SME banking with established digital/business platforms.
Best low-entry option for a sole proprietor from the products reviewed: HLB's Pay&Save product stands out with its published RM50 initial deposit, but confirm that its features match your business rather than choosing it solely for the deposit.
Best for structured multi-user banking: RHB deserves particular attention because Reflex explicitly targets business cash-flow management and tiered access.
14. How to choose in 15 minutes
- Write down your entity type: sole proprietor, partnership, LLP or Sdn Bhd.
- Decide whether you need cash/cheque facilities or are fully digital.
- Count how many people need banking access.
- Decide whether maker/checker approval is required.
- List overseas/FX requirements.
- Check the exact product's initial deposit and service fees.
- Test the bank's business app/web platform—not the personal app.
- Only then consider promotions or referral rewards.
Bottom line
For most new Sdn Bhd owners, the opening deposit is a minor factor compared with the banking workflow you will use every week. Maybank, CIMB and RHB are sensible first comparisons; smaller or specialised businesses may prefer another bank. Choose the account that makes collections, approvals, payments and reconciliation easiest for your actual business.
